How to calculate BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on your weight and height. You can calculate your BMI using the following formula:
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)^2
or
BMI = weight (lb) / height (in)^2 x 703
Here's an example of how to calculate your BMI using the metric system: If you weigh 70 kg and are 1.75 meters tall, your BMI would be:
BMI = 70 / (1.75)^2 = 23.15
Here's an example of how to calculate your BMI using the imperial system: If you weigh 150 lb and are 5'8" tall, your BMI would be:
BMI = 150 / (68)^2 x 703 = 22.3
Once you have your BMI, you can use the following chart to determine your weight status:
- Under 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5 - 24.9: Normal weight
- 25.0 - 29.9: Overweight
- 30.0 and above: Obese
It's important to note that BMI is not a perfect measure of body fat, as it doesn't take into account factors such as muscle mass, body composition, and overall health. Other measurements such as body composition analysis, skinfold thickness, and waist circumference can give a more accurate picture of a person's health. Additionally, BMI should not be used to diagnose obesity or overweight in individuals who are very muscular or athletes as they may have a higher BMI but lower body fat.
